Are You Easy To Work With?
Technical skills might get you the job, but how you work with the people around you is often what shapes your career.
The people who stand out in architecture, design and construction aren’t always the smartest in the room. They’re the ones people genuinely enjoy working with!
A few things that make a biggest difference:
– Communicate well. Keep people informed, ask questions when you’re unsure, and don’t leave others guessing.
– Be professional. How your colleagues, clients and consultants experience working with you becomes your reputation.
– Have a can-do attitude. Be willing to step up, take initiative and look for solutions instead of waiting to be told what to do.
– Accept feedback. Every project is a chance to learn. The people who progress the fastest are usually the ones who are open to constructive feedback, not defensive. (See our post about handling criticism! https://megarecruitment.com.au/criticism-is-a-pearl-have-you-ever-thought-about-criticism-as-a-positive/)
– Challenge ideas, not people. Healthy debate makes projects better. Speak up when you have a different perspective, but remember that your way isn’t always the only way.
– Be collaborative. Great projects aren’t built by one person. The best teams are made up of people who share knowledge, support each other and work towards the same outcome.
These are also some great qualities to talk about in an interview! Employers aren’t just assessing your technical ability, they’re trying to understand what you’ll be like to work with day in, day out. Back these attributes up with real examples from your experience, and they’ll leave a much stronger impression than simply saying you’re a “team player.”
Being easy to work with doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. It means being someone people trust, respect and want on their team.
