Reference Checks: What Are
We Actually Looking For?

So you’ve been put down as a reference, but what are we actually looking for from you?
Being a referee is more than confirming someone worked at your company. When you put your name behind someone, you’re giving a recommendation based on your own experience with them.

When we conduct reference checks at Mega, we want an honest response. We’re interested in their:
– Skills
– Work ethic
– Character
– Communication
– How they worked with others

…but the detail behind your answers is what really helps.

Instead of “they were great working in the team,” tell us WHY. What did they do well? What were their strengths on the team or project? Where did they add value?

And honest feedback doesn’t always have to be negative. Sometimes it’s about providing context, such as:
“They didn’t have many opportunities to demonstrate leadership while they were with us, but they weren’t given the opportunity at the time. Given the chance, I think they would do really well.”

That gives us a much clearer picture of the person, beyond what’s written on their CV. So, if someone has trusted you to be their referee, we want your honest opinion, your experience and the detail behind it.

The more specific you can be, the more valuable your reference is!
