Approaching Your Mentor/Superior For A
'How Are You Tracking?' Conversation
Approaching your mentor or superior for a “how are we tracking?” catch-up can feel intimidating, but it shouldn’t be.
It’s important to remember, these conversations aren’t just for you, they’re for them too.
It’s about asking the right questions, creating structure, and making sure you’re both aligned. Without it, you don’t know how you’re performing, and your boss doesn’t fully know what you’re doing or how you’re progressing.
Even a 5-minute conversation can:
– Keep you on track and accountable with your tasks
– Improve your performance
– Build confidence in your work
– Support your growth
Of course, there will be weeks where catch-ups don’t happen (sickness, workload, life). Give your mentor grace in those moments, but stay consistent, be patient, and don’t be afraid to be assertive in prioritising your growth. And sometimes you’ll need to remind your mentor why these catch-ups matter, they’re essential for your development.
Remember, taking initiative makes you stand out!
